What are fillers?

Fillers are a gel that is made up of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is found naturally in our skin, however we start losing it as we age. HA fillers are commonly used to treat unwanted signs of aging, including volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles, and under eye bags. It can also be used to help enhance lips to make them more plump and moisturized, contour the face and cheeks, as well as sharpen the jawline and chin. HA dermal fillers attract moisture in the skin’s tissue, therefore plumping up the skin and restoring a more youthful appearance. Looking for something more specific? What can I expect during my appointment?

The appointment will last approximately one hour. This includes time for an assessment and consultation, signing paperwork, and complimentary topical numbing. Either a small needle, or cannula will be used to lessen discomfort and reduce bleeding and swelling. The HA filler products also contain lidocaine within the gel to also help with discomfort.

How soon will I see results?

The great thing about filler is that the results are instant. You may have some mild swelling for up to 2 weeks. If excessive bleeding or bruising occurred, you will have more swelling. You can use arnica and ice to help.

How long do fillers last?

The longevity of dermal filler depends on the area treated, type of filler being used, activities such as heavy exercise, and the individual patient’s metabolism. Once you have obtained your aesthetic goal, dermal filler can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Your body will naturally reabsorb the filler, and you may want a touch up before it is completely gone.

What are side effects of filler?

As with any procedure involving a needle, bleeding and bruising are potential side effects. We would ask that you refrain from drinking alcohol 48 hours prior to treatment, as well as avoid NSAID medications such as Motrin and Aleeve. Please ask your physician prior to stopping any prescription blood thinning medications. Other side effects include tenderness at injection site or lumps/bumps. These are more rare and usually resolve within one week.
